As the pandemic restrictions loosened, High Trees Community Action began door knocking on ‘The Fields’ estate on Upper Tulse Hill. We found a number of friendly, engaged residents with some common concerns and shared hopes for their community. We started holding meetings at High Trees for emerging community leaders to come together regularly, connect with each other, plan for collective action on the issues affecting their lives and develop their Community Organising knowledge and skills. Inspiring leaders developed and grew stronger gradually carrying out tactics like door knocking and petitions to build their base. They got public meetings with senior officers from the two housing associations on the estate where they were able to discuss their priority issues and what changes they needed to see happen. They have recently had an AGM where membership has more than doubled since our involvement and includes tenants of both housing associations (which it didn’t previously). There is a way to go yet but this group is well on their way!
