ESOL Literacy Volunteer

Hours: Volunteers must commit to at least two hours a week for one 12-week term (Sept to December, January to April, May to July).

High Trees are looking for a friendly and creative ESOL Literacy Volunteer (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to support learners on a one-to-one basis to improve their reading and writing. We are especially looking for volunteers who are passionate about supporting learners with low confidence to improve their English and literacy. This is an exciting opportunity to help someone read for the first time by creating a
learning environment that promotes self-esteem, allowing adult learners to participate more fully in their community. We will also be happy to provide volunteers with a reference for future employment
and/or training.

Main responsibilities
• To prepare resources for literacy support
• To provide 1-1 or small group support to learners who would like to improve
their literacy skills on a weekly basis
• To help maintain a safe environment for learners, in accordance with the
Health & Safety at Work Act and High Trees Safeguarding and Prevent procedures.

Skills required
• Previous experience of teaching reading/ literacy to children or adults
• Reliable and punctual in attending the sessions
• Good social and communication skills
• Ability to motivate ESOL learners and to engage positively with them
• Positive and non-judgmental attitude
