Online Courses During Lockdown

Due to the current lockdown, we’ve had to move this term’s courses to remote learning. This means they’ll all take place online on zoom, which is an online platform that allows for an interactive classroom. The classes and key resources will be available via any digital device and our friendly team will provide you full support to get online via phone and email.

High Trees run an exciting variety of free courses, including functional skills ICT, English and Maths, ESOL classes, vocational courses, Family Learning, Art and Wellbeing and Community Organising courses.

Our offer of accredited and non-accredited courses range from basic skills that can help with employment or build skills for everyday life, to specialised accredited courses that can provide routes into new areas (such as housing, community action or education).

Our provision is delivered across all High Trees venues, which includes the High Trees Learning Centre, the Scout’s Hut and the Tulse Hill Adventure Playground, or in multiple other venues in Lambeth, including children’s centres and libraries.

We recognise that some learners have previously had little or negative experiences of education and training, so we aim to offer all of our courses in a supportive environment and to provide you with the best guidance about opportunities for volunteering, accessing further or higher education and training.

ICT Entry 3

Course details

Our accredited Functional Skills ICT courses are designed for learners who want to learn practical, transferable skills in ICT in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life and achieve a qualification.

This ICT accredited course at Entry 3 Level runs on Mondays or Tuesdays from 10am until 3pm for 10 weeks. During your class time you will attend group session on Zoom, receive 1:1s with your tutor and complete homework. We are able to accommodate learners who are unable to attend for the whole duration of the class and we will work with you to support you to learn in a friendly and engaging environment. Course start dates are 18/01/21 and 19/01/2021 (we are able to accommodate learners who are enrolling at a later date). Course will end on 22/03/21 and 23/03/21 with the final exam taking place face to face in COVID-secure conditions, according to the latest government guidelines and Awarding Body recommendation.

English Functional Skills Entry Level 1-3

Course details

By the end of this course you will be able to demonstrate the ability, at an appropriate level, to read, write speak, listen and communicate in English and you will also be able to apply this knowledge and these skills within specific situations.

Our accredited Functional Skills English courses are designed for learners who want to achieve a qualification in English. Our English Functional Skill at Entry 1 runs on Tuesday from 10am-2pm. Starting date is 12th January (we are able to accommodate learners who are enrolling at a later date. and course will end on the 30th March with final exam taking place face to face in COVID 19 safe conditions, according to the latest government guidelines and Awarding Body recommendation.

During your class time you will attend group session on ZOOM, receive 1:1s with your tutor and complete homework. We are able to accommodate learners who are unable to attend for the whole duration of the class and we will work with you to support you to learn in a friendly and engaging environment.

This is a progression level, so ideal for learners who have been attending courses with us in September and are progressing onto a more advance level. Maths Functional Skills Level 1

Learn how to use Maths in everyday life and gain a qualification in the field!

This accredited course will run on Wednesday from 10am to 2pm from the 13th of January to the 23rd of March via group sessions on ZOOM. Upon successful completion you will gain the NCFE LEVEL 1 FUNCTIONAL SKILLS QUALIFICATION IN MATHEMATICS.

Getting Ready for Online Interviews

We all know that preparing for a job interview can be a nerve-wracking process, but when the task includes having to rely on technology to impress a potential employer and explore the world of on line or telephone interview, the process can feel even more daunting.

This engaging and dynamic two day course will run on the 26th and 28th of January from 10am to 1.30pm via group sessions on Zoom.

This course is designed to help you build your confidence. During this course you will explore how to use the most common interview techniques such as the STAR model, how to overcome interview nerves, how to avoid common interview mistakes and how to conduct a successful remote interview.

All participants will get access to teaching online resources and the opportunity of 1:1 sessions. We are able to accommodate learners who are unable to attend for the whole duration of the class and we will work with you to support you to learn in a friendly and supportive environment.

Keeping Up With the Children – Maths

Course details

This engaging 5 day course will support parents and carers of school aged children to help their children with Maths homework. This course runs on Thursdays from the 28th of January 20201 until the 25th of February from 1pm to 3pm via group session on Zoom. With schools moving to online teaching, we know how difficult is to ensure that your children are not missing out their progress in education and to support the little ones with their homework and independent learning. Parents and careers are everyday superheroes, but sometimes they need a little help, especially when the Maths their children are studying looks so different and has new models of calculation!

During this on line course, you will brush up your Maths skills and gain confidence to support your children to learn in a stress-free and fun way. All learners will get access to teaching online resources and the opportunity of 1:1 sessions with their tutor. We are able to accommodate learners who are unable to attend for the whole duration of the class and we will work with you to support you to learn in a friendly and supportive environment.

Please note that this course is funded by Lambeth Housing and it is exclusively open to learners who are Lambeth Housing tenants. Award in Information Advice and Guidance Level 2

Course details

The purpose of the qualification is to provide the learner with an understanding of the role of an Information, Advice and Guidance worker and the skills used in this area. This qualifications gives support to those working as advice or guidance providers to be able to guide those they are supporting to make informed choices.

This Level 2 qualification will run on Tuesday and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm for from the 2nd of February to the 16th of March via group sessions on ZOOM (we are able to accommodate learners who are enrolling at a later date).

This qualification is particularly suitable for those who are:

  • Involved in giving advice, information or guidance in any settings (e.g. education, employment support, youth services etc.)
  • Front line staff – receptionists, secretaries, learner support workers, mentors
  • People working in voluntary organisations

Upon successful completion of the course and the submission of 2 assignments, you will achieve the OCNLR Level 2 Award in Information, Advice or Guidance qualification. This course is funded by Lambeth Adult Learning and open to all London residents aged 19 +, who are unemployed on in recipe of benefits. One Day Food & Hygiene Level 2

Course details

The  course is designed for anyone who works with, or handles food and wants to meet the UK food training requirements. In this online course you will learn about the impact of food-borne illnesses, food safety hazards and contamination, food preservation, storage and temperature control, as well as HACCP.

This one day training will run on Wednesday the 3rd of February from 10am to 2pm via group session on Zoom. Please note that this course is funded by Lambeth Housing and it is exclusively open to learners who are Lambeth Housing tenants. You will be asked to provide a proof of address in order to join the course. All participants will get access to teaching online resources, a code to submit your final test on line and the opportunity of 1:1 sessions. Once you complete your test on line, you will receive a certificate either online or delivered at your house.

Supporting Children with SEN during COVID-19

Course details

Welcome to High Trees and thank you for signing up to our Family Learning course. This 5 week course will run for 5 sessions on  Fridays from 12pm to 3pm from the 5th of February to the 5th of March via ZOOM.

We know how difficult it is to keep your children busy at home, especially when schools are closed and opportunities are limited. This disruption of routine becomes even more overwhelming for families with SEN children, that rely on order, structure, and predictability to feel safe and secure.

This support course is a mixture of fun activities for SEN children, learning for parents and 1:1 support with experienced autism practitioner and Family Learning Tutor. The course will engage children with SEN in activities prepared to meet their needs, parents will have an opportunity to learn how to support their children through various activities and strategies. Throughout the whole course, parents will also have access to 1:1 support to discuss any particular issues they may have.

After the course you will have a better understanding of autism and challenges it may bring, of how SEN children play, of how to make play more therapeutic and how to see autism as a different ability rather than disability.

Our experienced tutor Ola will incorporate in this course, anything that you may find useful, so make sure you include your requests in this form. Some of the topics we will explore are mindfulness for children to support their mental well-being, sensory activities to develop their senses and duties around the house to improve independence in children. You will be able to use what you are already have in your house and explore new resources available for SEN families.

Africology

Course details

Africology is the study of African phenomena and it looks at the impact of African history on the world. During this two day session we will be looking in particular at the “African Satellite Kingdoms of The Mediterranean,  gaining an insight into the Garamantes and Pelasgian occupation and peopling of Greece, Italy and Anatolia and in particular at the impact on later inherited classical cultures of those civilizations.

This training will run on Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm to 9pm on the 10th and 11th of February  via group sessions on ZOOM. Building Power through Community Organising

On this course you will explore and develop your understanding of power, which is what drives community organising: what power means and how power can be built in community to overcome social injustice and create change.

This two session course will take place on Zoom on Thursday & Friday from 10am to 1.30pm on the 11th February & 12th February. The course also provides a reminder of the basics of community organising which are covered in our Introduction to Community Organising course. Sessions are designed so that everybody can take part and share their ideas and experiences and learn some practical tools and skills. CIH Level 3 Housing Practice

This one-day course will explore how you can make change for good through collective action. You will explore the different types of action you can take, from DIY action to campaigning, explore stories of action and success factors and learn how to develop a strategy for change based on listening, building people power and leadership and picking tactics and methods for action.
