For Brian, becoming a learner at High Trees marked the beginning of a journey that has taken him from feeling disconnected and uncertain about his future to volunteering and supporting others.
After a period of ill health and unemployment, Brian was referred to High Trees. Initially lacking confidence and with limited digital and maths skills, he decided to take the step into learning.
Through our digital skills and maths courses, Brian found a supportive environment where he could learn alongside people from diverse backgrounds, build new friendships and gradually regain his confidence.
“From that moment I felt welcomed and valued. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”
For Brian, his journey at High Trees didn’t stop there. After completing his courses, he began volunteering, supporting other learners on a digital skills course at High Trees. The impact this has had on his life has been far reaching.
“Volunteering has given me a structure and a purpose and a way to continue to develop myself whilst contributing to the success of others.”
Yet it goes beyond just the personal, as he shares, “When I first started volunteering, I thought I was stepping outside my own journey to support someone else’s. But I’ve realised they’re connected.”
He is now exploring opportunities to become a digital classroom assistant or Tutor, using the skills and experience he has gained to help others and open up new career opportunities. His story shows how learning can create a ripple effect – helping people build skills and confidence, develop new connections and, in turn, support others in their community.
At High Trees, every learner’s journey is different, but with the right support, learning can open the door to new possibilities.
