Last week, we ran ‘Shared Stories’, a week-long course designed for migrants and refugees who wanted to share their journeys and help others navigating life in Lambeth. During the course, eleven learners came together to create a digital guide filled with tips, advice and their personal experiences, aimed at supporting others who are currently seeking asylum.
Throughout the week, learners were supported to explore the topics that matter to them. They created content through storytelling, art and creative writing, including a poetry activity titled “If I could tell you one thing”. Some even picked up new digital skills, like using Canva to design sections of the guide. They all worked as a team to help future migrants understand about elements of UK life such as schools, NHS support, and learning English.
While learning practical skills, the group also discovered how telling your story can help others feel seen, supported, and more hopeful. Since the course, one learner has secured their first job and others are focusing on further learning and volunteering.
“I improved my IT skills as well as my communication, presentation and confidence to talk in groups. Everyone had freedom to give opinions and was given the opportunity to talk. I now plan to develop my skills and work as a teaching assistant.”
The result of this was ‘Welcome to Lambeth: A Guide for Individuals Seeking Asylum’, a comprehensive guide filled with tips, advice and helpful resources, created by migrants, for migrants. We couldn’t be prouder of what this group has achieved and are so excited to celebrate their incredible work at the upcoming launch event!
